Haven Neighborhood Services

Volunteer: Nancy Tarr

Haven Neighborhood Services' mission is to financially empower vulnerable communities in Los Angeles by providing no-cost financial education and direct services to end their financial and housing crisis.

Nancy Tarr was first introduced to Haven Neighborhood Services through the Alliance for Economic Inclusion meetings. The intention of these meetings hosted by the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) was to connect financial institutions and non-profits to better serve the needs of the community. After hearing about the good work that Haven does in the community and seeing an alignment in values, she started volunteering with Haven's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). Nancy has been volunteering for two years now, and this year she has even increased her availability to help Haven out with the rise in demand from the community seeking free tax preparation services and has volunteered over 75 hours over the course of 20 days for the 2024 tax season. Nancy has annually completed the IRS volunteer certification requirement exams, which consist of a Standards of Conduct exam, Intake/Interview and Quality Review exam, along with the Advanced Tax preparer exam. Nancy is the ideal volunteer as she assisted Haven by confirming taxpayer eligibility for VITA, completed the Intake/Interview forms, prepared advanced tax returns, and performed advanced quality reviews of tax returns prepared by other volunteers. Nancy is a great volunteer who is always willing to help where needed and has demonstrated great leadership and accountability by always arriving on time to volunteer. Her willingness to model and allow new volunteers to shadow makes her such a successful volunteer and a great asset at Haven Neighborhood Services.
